The Buzz Off Story

No hair. No eyelashes.

My HERO.

When One Mission founder Ashley Haseotes’ son lost his hair due to cancer treatment, she found herself overwhelmed with worry about how the world would treat him. She braced herself for the stares, the pity, and the awkward comments – because they came.

For her son, Nicholas, though, losing his hair wasn’t a big deal at all. At just seven months old, he didn’t understand what was happening.

For many of the families around them during treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital, hair loss was the BIGGEST challenge they faced, often more difficult than the treatment itself.

Think about that for a second. As a kid, you know you have cancer, but all you care about is…

HOW WILL I LOOK, and HOW WILL PEOPLE TREAT ME WHEN I GO BALD?

A few months after starting One Mission, Ashley came across this photo of Nicholas, and in that moment, the idea for the One Mission Buzz Off was born. While raising much-needed funds for One Mission’s programs and services was important, the purpose went deeper than that. She wanted kids facing cancer to know there are people out there who have their backs — even if they remain strangers forever.
